What is exercise physiology?

Exercise physiology (EP) is the science of exercise as medicine. It uses the careful application of exercise as a treatment and therapy to help people get fitter for all round good health or to treat specific medical conditions.
Treatment takes place in a clinic-based gym setting and helps with injury rehabilitation, or to prevent or manage a chronic disease.
Applied clinically, exercise has been proven to

What does an exercise physiologist do?

An exercise physiologist delivers and evaluates safe and effective exercise programs. They supervise clients exercising to ensure correct technique and performance to achieve the right results.
They create treatment programs for

  • Fitness
  • Rehabilitation
  • Prevention and management of
    • Medical conditions
    • Injuries
    • Disabilities.

Knowledgeable and competent, exercise physiologist are university qualified allied health professionals.

Chronic disease management

When you suffer from a chronic condition, it can be difficult to imagine how exercise can be beneficial, or build up the motivation to get started. EPs help you understand your condition and provide compassionate guidance and support. They create exercise programs that will help you to manage your specific condition and improve your quality of life.

  • Osteoporosis
  • Back pain
  • Mental health
  • Asthma
  • Pulmonary and cardiovascular diseases

EPs also treat healthy people and map out long term plans to help you maintain good health and prevent conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

What makes EP’s different?

They are:

  • Allied health professionals with extensive knowledge, skills and experience in clinical exercise delivery
  • Able to provide health modification counselling for people at risk of developing, or with existing chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries
  • Minimum four-year university qualified including extensive training to treat clients with chronic conditions
    Eligible to register with Medicare Australia, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and WorkCover and recognised by most private health insurers

What next?

All patients under Medicare, DVA, Workers Compensation and CTP claims will need a referral prior to attending an initial consultation.
